Hip discomfort and walking confidence

When Your Hip Makes Every Step Feel Like A Negotiation

Hip discomfort can be surprisingly disruptive. It may be the first few steps after sitting, rolling over at night, climbing stairs, getting into the car or simply trying to enjoy a walk without thinking about your body.

The part that can be hard to say out loud

When your next step no longer feels automatic.

“I do not want to keep opting out of walks and outings.”

The first few steps after sitting, a walk with someone you care about, or rolling over at night can start to carry more weight than they should. It can be frustrating when your body changes the pace of plans you enjoy.

Does this sound familiar?

Sometimes the hardest part is how quietly life changes around it.

01

You are taking stairs one at a time or reaching for the handrail more often.

02

Walking feels different from one side to the other.

03

You have quietly cut back on activities you enjoy because you are unsure how your hip will respond.

What might be contributing?

The Hip Does Not Work In Isolation

Hip symptoms can be influenced by the hip itself, but also by the lower back, pelvis, knee, walking pattern, previous injuries and the activities your body is being asked to do.

That is why an assessment should look at your movement as a whole rather than only at the point you feel discomfort.

What Dr Charlton assesses

Before recommendations, we take time to look at the whole picture.

Not every person needs every test or every approach. The assessment is shaped around what has been happening, what matters to you, and what the findings suggest is appropriate.

  • Walking, stairs, sitting and the movements that are difficult
  • Hip, lower-back and knee movement
  • Relevant strength, balance and load tolerance
  • Whether referral, imaging or shared care is appropriate

Practical questions, answered

A clear process before any care is recommended.

Your first visit

What happens at the complimentary consultation?

Your first visit starts with a complimentary consultation with Dr Charlton. He will listen to what has been happening, how it is affecting your life and what you would like to get back to. If it appears he may be able to help, he will then conduct a thorough examination relevant to your symptoms, health history and goals, before explaining the findings and appropriate next steps in plain language.

Tests and investigations

What testing might be relevant?

Dr Charlton may assess how you walk, climb stairs, sit, stand and move your hip, lower back and knee, together with relevant strength and balance. Imaging is not needed for every hip concern. On-site digital X-rays are available where clinically indicated; other investigations, if needed, can be discussed with you and coordinated through your GP.

Referral and shared care

When might another pathway be better?

GP review, physiotherapy, specialist assessment or shared care may be appropriate if the pattern suggests a joint, medical or other cause requiring a different pathway. A hot, red or swollen joint, fever, a visible deformity, sudden severe pain, or inability to bear weight after injury needs prompt medical assessment.

What care could involve

A plan should make sense for your body and your life.

Recommendations may include gradual mobility and strength work, changes to aggravating activities, hands-on care where appropriate, and a plan built around the walking, exercise or life tasks you want back.

Common questions

A few things people often want to know.

Could hip pain be coming from my back?

Sometimes the lower back and hip can influence one another, but this varies from person to person. An assessment helps clarify which areas need attention.

Should I keep walking?

It depends on the type of discomfort, your capacity and what your assessment shows. The aim is often to find a manageable way to stay moving rather than make a blanket rule.
