Knee discomfort and staying active
When Your Knee Changes The Way You Move Through Your Day
Knee discomfort often becomes obvious when life asks you to do the things you normally take for granted: stairs, squatting, getting up from a chair, walking the dog or keeping up with family.
The part that can be hard to say out loud
It is hard when your body asks you to hesitate on the way down.
“I want to trust my knee when life asks me to move.”
Stairs, a squat, walking the dog or getting up from the couch can stop feeling automatic. Many people find the hardest part is not knowing whether to keep going, slow down, or leave the things they enjoy for another day.
Does this sound familiar?
Sometimes the hardest part is how quietly life changes around it.
You no longer trust a squat, a step down or a long walk in the same way.
You are unsure whether to rest, push through or stop activity altogether.
What might be contributing?
The Knee Is Part Of A Movement Chain
Knee symptoms may involve the knee itself, but how the foot, hip, lower back, strength, balance and training load work together can also matter.
The goal of an assessment is not to oversimplify it. It is to understand what your knee needs to manage in your real life.
What Dr Charlton assesses
Before recommendations, we take time to look at the whole picture.
Not every person needs every test or every approach. The assessment is shaped around what has been happening, what matters to you, and what the findings suggest is appropriate.
- Walking, stairs, squatting and activity history
- Hip, knee, ankle and lower-back movement
- Relevant strength, balance and load tolerance
- Whether medical review, imaging or another referral is needed
Practical questions, answered
A clear process before any care is recommended.
What happens at the complimentary consultation?
Your first visit starts with a complimentary consultation with Dr Charlton. He will listen to what has been happening, how it is affecting your life and what you would like to get back to. If it appears he may be able to help, he will then conduct a thorough examination relevant to your symptoms, health history and goals, before explaining the findings and appropriate next steps in plain language.
What testing might be relevant?
Dr Charlton may assess your walking, stairs, squatting and activity history, as well as relevant hip, knee, ankle and lower-back movement, strength and balance. Imaging is not routine for every knee concern. On-site digital X-rays are available when clinically indicated, while other investigations can be discussed with you and coordinated through your GP if needed.
When might another pathway be better?
GP, physiotherapy, specialist or shared care may be appropriate if the assessment suggests another cause or pathway. A red, hot or swollen knee, fever, visible deformity, sudden severe pain or an inability to bear weight after injury needs prompt medical assessment.
What care could involve
A plan should make sense for your body and your life.
Recommendations may include activity modification, mobility, strength and balance work, hands-on care where appropriate, and a gradual return to the tasks you value.

Common questions
A few things people often want to know.
Could my hip or foot affect my knee?
They can be relevant for some people because the knee works within a larger movement system. An assessment looks at what is most meaningful in your situation.
Should I keep exercising?
The right answer varies. A plan can help you find ways to remain active while respecting current symptoms and capacity.
