Migraines, light sensitivity and a careful conversation

When A Migraine Starts Making The Day Feel Smaller

A migraine can make the ordinary parts of a day feel suddenly harder to manage. You might need a darker room, cancel plans, step away from a screen, or try to keep going while knowing you are not really present.

The part that can be hard to say out loud

The unpredictability can shape more than one afternoon.

“I miss being able to make plans without a backup plan.”

When you are watching the light, noise, screen time or schedule because a migraine might be coming, your week can start to feel organised around avoidance. That unpredictability can be as draining as the episode itself.

Does this sound familiar?

Sometimes the hardest part is how quietly life changes around it.

01

Light, noise, screens or a busy day can feel harder to tolerate than usual.

02

You are planning around the possibility of a migraine, even when you would rather not.

03

You are not sure whether your neck, sleep, stress, routine or something else is part of the picture.

What might be contributing?

Migraines Deserve A Careful, Individual Conversation

Migraines can have many possible contributors and triggers, and people can experience them in different ways. It would not be appropriate to assume there is one explanation or one type of care that suits everyone.

Our first role is to listen carefully, screen for anything that needs medical attention, and consider whether chiropractic care, medical review or another pathway is most appropriate.

What Dr Charlton assesses

Before recommendations, we take time to look at the whole picture.

Not every person needs every test or every approach. The assessment is shaped around what has been happening, what matters to you, and what the findings suggest is appropriate.

  • Your migraine pattern, history, associated symptoms and possible triggers
  • Relevant neck, shoulder and upper-back movement where appropriate
  • Screening questions and neurological findings
  • Whether GP review, referral or further investigation should be prioritised

Practical questions, answered

A clear process before any care is recommended.

Your first visit

What happens at the complimentary consultation?

Your first visit starts with a complimentary consultation with Dr Charlton. He will listen to what has been happening, how it is affecting your life and what you would like to get back to. If it appears he may be able to help, he will then conduct a thorough examination relevant to your symptoms, health history and goals, before explaining the findings and appropriate next steps in plain language.

Tests and investigations

What testing might be relevant?

There is no single test that confirms migraine. A useful starting point is a careful history of your pattern, associated symptoms, possible triggers and how episodes affect your life; a migraine diary can sometimes help. Dr Charlton may assess relevant neck and upper-body movement where appropriate and screen for features that need medical review. Your GP may arrange tests or specialist review if another cause needs to be considered.

Referral and shared care

When might another pathway be better?

Because migraine is a neurological condition with individual patterns, medical review is important for a new, changing or worsening pattern and for frequent or highly disruptive episodes. A sudden severe headache, or headache with vomiting, confusion, neck stiffness, visual change, seizure, loss of balance or other concerning neurological symptoms, needs urgent medical assessment.

What care could involve

A plan should make sense for your body and your life.

Where neck movement or muscle tension appears relevant and chiropractic care is appropriate, recommendations may include hands-on approaches, mobility guidance, ergonomic support and practical home strategies. Recommendations are always based on an individual assessment.

A sudden severe headache, new neurological symptoms, a major change in headache pattern, or a headache after significant trauma needs prompt medical assessment.

Common questions

A few things people often want to know.

Can migraines be related to the neck?

Neck symptoms can occur alongside migraines for some people, but migraines have a range of possible contributors. A careful assessment helps determine whether neck movement is relevant and whether medical review is needed.

What happens at my first visit for migraines?

Your first visit starts with a complimentary consultation with Dr Charlton. He will ask about your migraine pattern, associated symptoms, possible triggers and daily-life impact. If it appears appropriate, an examination and relevant screening follow before he explains the next step.

Will I need a scan or other test for migraines?

There is no single test that confirms migraine, and scans are not routine for a typical stable pattern. If another investigation or specialist review is indicated, this will be discussed with you and coordinated through your GP or another appropriate clinician.

When should I seek urgent medical help for a migraine?

A sudden severe headache, or headache with vomiting, confusion, neck stiffness, visual change, seizure, loss of balance or other concerning neurological symptoms, needs urgent medical assessment.

When should I seek medical advice for migraines?

Medical review is important for a new, changing or worsening pattern and for frequent or highly disruptive episodes. If you are unsure, it is appropriate to seek medical advice.
