Pins and needles and altered sensation

When Tingling Starts Making You Wonder What Is Going On

Pins and needles can be easy to dismiss at first. Then you notice it again in the car, at your desk, during a walk or when you wake up—and it starts to play on your mind.

The part that can be hard to say out loud

Not knowing what a sensation means can sit in the background.

“I want to understand why this keeps happening.”

A strange tingling can be easy to brush off once, then much harder to ignore when it returns in the car, at the desk or overnight. Not having a clear explanation can leave a quiet worry in the background of the day.

Does this sound familiar?

Sometimes the hardest part is how quietly life changes around it.

01

A hand, arm, foot or leg feels different in certain positions.

02

You are shaking out a limb, changing position or wondering why a sensation keeps returning.

03

You want a clearer answer than simply being told to wait and see.

What might be contributing?

Sensation Changes Need Careful Assessment

Pins and needles can have a range of possible causes, from position and local irritation through to broader medical factors. It is not something to label casually from a webpage.

A thorough history and relevant neurological examination help determine whether chiropractic care may be appropriate or whether another medical pathway should come first.

What Dr Charlton assesses

Before recommendations, we take time to look at the whole picture.

Not every person needs every test or every approach. The assessment is shaped around what has been happening, what matters to you, and what the findings suggest is appropriate.

  • Where and when the sensation occurs
  • Relevant neck, back, limb and nerve-function findings
  • Your medical history and any changes over time
  • Whether prompt medical review or further investigation is appropriate

Practical questions, answered

A clear process before any care is recommended.

Your first visit

What happens at the complimentary consultation?

Your first visit starts with a complimentary consultation with Dr Charlton. He will listen to what has been happening, how it is affecting your life and what you would like to get back to. If it appears he may be able to help, he will then conduct a thorough examination relevant to your symptoms, health history and goals, before explaining the findings and appropriate next steps in plain language.

Tests and investigations

What testing might be relevant?

Dr Charlton may ask about where and when the sensation occurs, then assess relevant spinal and limb movement and nerve function such as strength, sensation and reflexes. Further tests are not routine for every presentation. If blood tests, imaging, nerve studies or another medical investigation would be useful, this can be discussed with you and coordinated through your GP.

Referral and shared care

When might another pathway be better?

Pins and needles can have many possible causes, so medical review may be the right first step when symptoms are persistent, worsening, widespread or not consistent with a musculoskeletal presentation. Sudden facial droop, speech or vision changes, new or progressing weakness, or bladder or bowel changes need urgent medical assessment.

What care could involve

A plan should make sense for your body and your life.

If care is appropriate, recommendations are built around the findings. If another practitioner is better placed to help, we will explain that clearly.

New or progressing weakness, sudden facial or speech changes, severe unexplained symptoms, or major changes in bladder or bowel control require urgent medical assessment.

Common questions

A few things people often want to know.

Are pins and needles always from a trapped nerve?

No. There are several possible causes, which is why an assessment matters before making assumptions.

When should I seek medical care?

Seek prompt medical care for sudden, severe, worsening or concerning neurological symptoms. If you are unsure, it is appropriate to ask a medical professional.
