After a motor vehicle accident

When Your Body Still Feels Different After The Car Has Been Repaired

After a car accident, people are often surprised by what happens next. You may have felt okay at first, then noticed stiffness, headaches, neck or back discomfort, sleep changes or a growing hesitation about driving and moving normally.

The part that can be hard to say out loud

It can take time for confidence to catch up after an accident.

“I want to feel comfortable behind the wheel again.”

After an accident, it can be unsettling when you do not quite feel like yourself in the days or weeks that follow. A drive, a shoulder check or sitting still can become reminders that the incident is still taking up space.

Does this sound familiar?

Sometimes the hardest part is how quietly life changes around it.

01

The impact seemed minor, but your body does not quite feel like it did before.

02

You are unsure what is normal, what to monitor and where to begin.

03

Driving, turning your head or sitting for a while has become more noticeable.

What might be contributing?

A Clearer Picture Comes Before A Plan

Accident-related symptoms need an individual approach. The nature of the incident, timing, medical history, symptoms and any existing medical care all matter.

The first priority is understanding whether you need medical assessment, imaging, co-management or a conservative plan based on your current findings.

What Dr Charlton assesses

Before recommendations, we take time to look at the whole picture.

Not every person needs every test or every approach. The assessment is shaped around what has been happening, what matters to you, and what the findings suggest is appropriate.

  • What happened and how symptoms have changed since
  • Relevant neck, back, limb and neurological findings
  • Your current medical, insurance or rehabilitation pathway
  • Whether urgent review, imaging or referral is appropriate

Practical questions, answered

A clear process before any care is recommended.

Your first visit

What happens at the complimentary consultation?

Your first visit starts with a complimentary consultation with Dr Charlton. He will listen to what has been happening, how it is affecting your life and what you would like to get back to. If it appears he may be able to help, he will then conduct a thorough examination relevant to your symptoms, health history and goals, before explaining the findings and appropriate next steps in plain language.

Tests and investigations

What testing might be relevant?

The assessment considers the accident details, timing of symptoms, current medical care and relevant neck, back, limb and neurological findings. After an accident, imaging may be needed when the mechanism of injury or clinical findings suggest it; it is not automatic for every person. If imaging or medical review is appropriate, this can be coordinated through your GP or urgent-care service.

Referral and shared care

When might another pathway be better?

Following significant trauma, altered consciousness, severe or worsening pain, dizziness, new headache, new weakness or numbness, or other neurological symptoms, seek prompt medical assessment. Dr Charlton may also recommend GP, physiotherapy, specialist or shared care depending on your existing medical and rehabilitation pathway.

What care could involve

A plan should make sense for your body and your life.

If chiropractic care is appropriate, recommendations may be gentle and staged, with a focus on helping you understand your options and gradually rebuild confidence in movement.

After significant trauma, new neurological symptoms, severe pain or worsening symptoms should be assessed promptly by a medical professional.

Common questions

A few things people often want to know.

Should I see a doctor after an accident?

Medical assessment is important after an accident, especially for significant symptoms, trauma or concerning changes. We will recommend this where appropriate.

Can care start straight away?

It depends on the accident, your symptoms and any medical findings. An individual assessment helps determine the safest and most appropriate next step.
