Posture, comfort and capacity

Posture Is Not About Standing Perfectly Still

Most people do not come in because they want to look more upright. They come in because sitting, standing, working, walking or training has stopped feeling as comfortable or reliable as it once did.

The part that can be hard to say out loud

You do not need a perfect posture to want a more comfortable day.

“I want to finish the day with something left in the tank.”

The uncomfortable part is rarely how you look in a chair. It is the gradual fatigue that arrives by afternoon, the constant shifting, or feeling as though you cannot properly relax once you get home.

Does this sound familiar?

Sometimes the hardest part is how quietly life changes around it.

01

You keep being told to sit up straight, but it is hard to know what that actually means for your body.

02

You feel fine early in the day, then notice fatigue, tension or discomfort as the hours go on.

03

You are wondering whether your posture is part of a bigger reason your body is not keeping up.

What might be contributing?

Your Body Needs Options, Not One Perfect Position

Posture is not a pass-or-fail test. It is one part of how your body manages the positions and demands repeated through your day.

A useful approach looks at movement variety, strength, work habits, confidence and recovery—not simply whether you can hold yourself in one position.

What Dr Charlton assesses

Before recommendations, we take time to look at the whole picture.

Not every person needs every test or every approach. The assessment is shaped around what has been happening, what matters to you, and what the findings suggest is appropriate.

  • The tasks and positions that become tiring
  • Spinal and shoulder movement
  • How your posture changes with different activities
  • Practical opportunities for more movement, strength and support

Practical questions, answered

A clear process before any care is recommended.

Your first visit

What happens at the complimentary consultation?

Your first visit starts with a complimentary consultation with Dr Charlton. He will listen to what has been happening, how it is affecting your life and what you would like to get back to. If it appears he may be able to help, he will then conduct a thorough examination relevant to your symptoms, health history and goals, before explaining the findings and appropriate next steps in plain language.

Tests and investigations

What testing might be relevant?

Posture on its own does not usually require tests or imaging. Dr Charlton may look at the positions and tasks that become tiring, relevant spinal and shoulder movement, and the way your body responds across a normal day. If pain, injury or another finding suggests a different issue, he can discuss whether GP review, imaging or another clinician is appropriate.

Referral and shared care

When might another pathway be better?

If symptoms are severe, changing, associated with weakness, numbness, fever, significant trauma or another concerning feature, medical review may be the better first step. Referral is also appropriate where an assessment suggests your symptoms are not primarily related to musculoskeletal movement or load.

What care could involve

A plan should make sense for your body and your life.

Recommendations may include movement breaks, workstation or ergonomic guidance, mobility and strengthening work, hands-on care where appropriate, and a plan that is realistic for your day.

Common questions

A few things people often want to know.

Is there a perfect posture?

No single position is perfect for every person or every task. Comfort often improves when your body has more movement options and your setup supports the work you are doing.

Can posture change over time?

Bodies adapt to habits, injury, workload and movement. An assessment can help identify practical, individual areas to work on over time.
