Spinal curves and individual goals

When You Have Questions About The Shape And Function Of Your Spine

A scoliosis diagnosis can bring a lot of questions, whether it is new, something you have known about for years, or a concern you are noticing in yourself or your child.

The part that can be hard to say out loud

Questions need room for more than an X-ray.

“I want to know what matters without being overwhelmed by it.”

Questions about a spinal curve can carry more than physical concerns. Whether it is your own spine or your child’s, it can bring uncertainty about the future and a strong wish for clear, measured information.

Does this sound familiar?

Sometimes the hardest part is how quietly life changes around it.

01

You want to understand what a spinal curve means for your everyday life.

02

You are unsure which changes are worth monitoring and which information to trust.

03

You want a plan that sees the person, not just an X-ray.

What might be contributing?

The Curve Is Part Of The Picture, Not The Whole Picture

Scoliosis requires individual consideration. Symptoms, age, growth, curve history, movement, function and existing medical care can all be relevant.

A helpful conversation begins with your questions and goals, while respecting the role of appropriate medical monitoring and collaborative care.

What Dr Charlton assesses

Before recommendations, we take time to look at the whole picture.

Not every person needs every test or every approach. The assessment is shaped around what has been happening, what matters to you, and what the findings suggest is appropriate.

  • Your history, symptoms, imaging and current care
  • Movement, comfort and the activities that matter to you
  • Relevant postural and functional findings
  • Whether specialist or medical monitoring is needed

Practical questions, answered

A clear process before any care is recommended.

Your first visit

What happens at the complimentary consultation?

Your first visit starts with a complimentary consultation with Dr Charlton. He will listen to what has been happening, how it is affecting your life and what you would like to get back to. If it appears he may be able to help, he will then conduct a thorough examination relevant to your symptoms, health history and goals, before explaining the findings and appropriate next steps in plain language.

Tests and investigations

What testing might be relevant?

The assessment may consider your symptoms, movement, posture, existing imaging and current medical care. For a suspected or known structural curve, standing X-rays and ongoing monitoring are usually coordinated through a GP or specialist rather than assumed from a posture check alone. Dr Charlton can help you understand what the existing information means for your movement and day-to-day comfort.

Referral and shared care

When might another pathway be better?

Children and teenagers with suspected or known scoliosis need appropriate medical assessment and monitoring, particularly while they are growing. Referral to a GP, orthopaedic specialist, physiotherapist or another relevant clinician may be appropriate if a curve is new, changing or already under care. New neurological symptoms, significant pain or breathing concerns need prompt medical review.

What care could involve

A plan should make sense for your body and your life.

Where appropriate, support may focus on movement, comfort, strength, posture and confidence in daily life. Recommendations are individual and do not replace specialist medical advice where that is needed.

Common questions

A few things people often want to know.

Can chiropractic straighten a scoliosis?

It would not be appropriate to promise that. The purpose of care, where appropriate, is discussed individually and may focus on comfort, movement, function and support alongside other care.

Should children with scoliosis see a specialist?

Children and adolescents with suspected or known scoliosis should have appropriate medical assessment and monitoring. We can help you understand when referral is important.
